2019 Newberry Event Musicians

Tal Wilkenfeld
Tal Wilkenfeld is promoting her new album on a Pacific Northwest tour. “Love Remains” suggests, as Tal says, “the abiding presence of love… or the remnants should it fail. The way to diminish darkness is by shining a light on it. That’s what’s so beautiful and rewarding about music.” This is fitting for the Newberry Event , whose theme is, “Music heals.” 32-year-old, award-winning Tal Wilkenfeld is an Australian born bass and guitar phenom who has performed alongside artists including Jeff Beck, Prince, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock and Mick Jagger.

Pigs on the Wing
Friday, 7/26/19, 8 pm – 10 pm
“Capturing what made Pink Floyd iconic is a hard thing to do, and Pigs on the Wing come as close as anyone we’ve heard. That looming mystique, that inscrutable grandiosity……Those qualities are alive and well with Pigs on the Wing.” – Adam McKinney, OLY ARTS 5/10/17 Portland, Oregon based Pink Floyd tribute Pigs on the Wing announce the band’s 2019-2020 production, ‘Animals’ – a 2 set Pink Floyd concert experience featuring a full performance of Pink Floyd’s 1977 album Animals – and full second set highlighting the very best of Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters-era catalog. Tracing its roots to a one-off performance in Portland in 2006, Pigs on the Wing has steadily developed a reputation for delivering a high quality, high energy take on Pink Floyd’s music steeped in the NW’s own rich musical heritage. All of the members of the band are seasoned veterans of the original rock scene and balance a decidedly un-tribute like attitude towards the music with a deep understanding of the precision and importance of Pink Floyd’s music in many fans’ lives. The result is a sound and experience both refreshing in delivery and yet true to the original – something the band believes sets it apart from other Pink Floyd tributes. Animals 2019: Pigs on the Wing has long considered Animals to be their defining

Rad Trads
Friday, 7/26/19, 2:45pm – 4:15 pm
The gentlemen comprising the Brooklyn-based five-piece The Rad Trads distinguish themselves in ways few bands can. Already drawing lines around the block at home, the globe-trotting group’s singular take on rock n’ roll mixes punk rock energy, horn drenched soul, and jazz precision, all with a lighthearted but sincere delivery. It’s a sound and show that is gaining steam world over as The Rad Trads continue to tour in support of On Tap, out now from Hornblow Recordings. Challenging but humorous, at times The Rad Trads bring to mind Springsteen and his “Big Man” Clarence Clemons, Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks-era vocal style, and Wilco’s epic guitar breakdowns. All of this sonic goodness is only upstaged by the fact that the guys in The Rad Trads manage to exist as five distinct songwriters and singers in a band that still sounds powerfully egoless, familial, and cohesive. And none of them even planned on being vocalists!

Dodgy Mountian Men
Friday, 7/26/19, 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm
Dodgy Mountain Men sling a home-brewed Montana stompgrass that goes down smooth but packs a bite, mixing the rhythms of bluegrass, the soul of the blues and the energy of rock ‘n’ roll with a plethora of other musical traditions to create a unique electro-acoustic experience. The group’s genre-bending experimentation and passion for American roots traditions weave together to emphasize their lyrical storytelling, creating a musical frontier rife with empty mason jars, outlaws, gypsy women and cold Montana storms. Add three distinct frontmen, a pension for sonic exploration and live performances that build to a fever pitch, and you’ve got a concoction that will make moonshiners proud and compel dancers to wear out the soles of their shoes.

The story of Indubious is not for the faint of heart. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Indubious was forged in the fires of pain and destruction. Evton and Skip, brothers and bandmates born with Cystic Fibrosis and convinced by doctors of their impending death from an early age, have emerged as a powerful force for change and the future of conscious music. Their only choice has always been mind over matter, and time has proven that their unbending positive outlook, combined with an inspiring message of love and hope, has not only helped them overcome personal hardship, but catapulted their music onto the world stage with an unstoppable momentum. Currently based in Oregon, Indubious has released four albums over the past few years

At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. What happened next is the story of Dead Horses’ stunning new album, My Mother the Moon, a record full of trauma and triumph, despair and hope, pain and resilience. Blending elements of traditional roots with contemporary indie folk, Dead Horses writes music that is both familiar and unexpected, unflinchingly honest in its portrayal of modern American life, yet optimistic in its unshakable faith in brighter days to come. Described by NPR Music as “evocative, empathetic storytelling,” My Mother the Moon earned a spot in No Depression’s “Best Roots Music Albums of 2018” list, and Rolling Stone Country declared the Wisconsin-based duo an “Artist You Need to Know.”

Leadbetter Band was born after the final closing chapters of Jive Coulis in the early winter of 2017. In a sense it was a “re-branding” of Jive Coulis. Eric was the songwriter and frontman for Jive, and that is still the case with Leadbetter Band. His original songs played in LB are vast and diverse, from a classic rock sound to bluesy heavy jam sections featuring the Bands unique improv abilities.
